Sakura Tsuruta transcends the role of a conventional artist, embodying the multifaceted roles of producer, performer, educator, and activist within the dynamic electronic music scene.
With a captivating fusion of dark, atmospheric tones and ethereal melodies, Sakura stands at the forefront of electronic music innovation. Her distinctive style, characterized by a seamless blend of haunting rhythms and celestial harmonies, transports audiences to a dystopian realm, leaving them enraptured and craving more.
Hailing from Hiroshima, Sakura made an indelible mark with the release of her debut single, ‘Dystopia,’ swiftly ascending the charts to claim a coveted spot in the Top 100 in the Electronica/Downtempo category on Beatport. Building on this success, Sakura unveiled her EP ‘Made of Air’ in June 2020, further solidifying her reputation as a boundary-pushing artist. Her LP “C / O,” released in 2022, garnered international
acclaim, drawing listeners from across the globe, and has since been reissued on vinyl via Mule Music, a prominent label in the ambient and electronica scenes.
Sakura’s sonic offerings have captivated audiences not only in Japan but also within like-minded creative communities worldwide. She continuously expands her collaborative horizons, venturing into realms such as augmented reality, audio-visual performances, sound installations, and fashion shows. Notably, Sakura’s talent has captured the attention of global brands including Ableton, Shiseido, Audio Technica,
Amazon, and FENDI, where she has lent her sonic expertise to enrich their projects.
Beyond her artistic endeavors, Sakura is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of musical talent. As a music production instructor at the Creative Media Institute in Yangon, Myanmar, she empowers aspiring artists to refine their skills and cultivate their unique creative voices. Additionally, Sakura conducts workshops at conservatories and music colleges across Tokyo, collaborating with her alma mater,
Berklee College of Music, to represent the Japanese alumni community and teach courses in electronic music production and performance.
An advocate for gender equality in music, Sakura has been a vocal champion for women’s rights in the industry, sharing her insights on prominent platforms such as Billboard Music. Her efforts in advocating for increased female representation in music have been recognized by Forbes Japan, resulting in a feature article and her appearance on the front cover of the May issue as one of Forbes Japan’s “100 Hopefuls Saving the World.”
Sakura’s unwavering commitment to innovation and her dedication to crafting immersive musical experiences continue to elevate her performances, solidifying her position as a visionary force in the electronic music landscape.
